I am not surprised with this at all. I had a feeling that thy had no desire to save dogs pups kittens or anything. They are in it for the money. You know the boss at the Waverley RSPCA had a desk that was worth like 100.000$?? WTF is he getting a table that dear when the money should be going to the protection of animals. There is also situations that need looking into with the care of horses. I know of 2 instances of neglect of horses and nothing had been done. They say that as long as they have water they cant do anything. What a load of bull. The horses were so thin they were dying on the spot. I saw this with my own eyes. No wonder people have organizations to do something about these appalling people from the RSPCA. I would be ashamed to say I worked there if I had a job with them. It is my opinion that these places should be shut down and let the true believers do there work and recognize them. As for puppy farm or kitten farms they need to be stopped. I know there is one near Warragul that should be shut down and the brokers for them should be stopped as well. They are supporting these farms. There is a lady on the trading post that is a broker for these people. Please don’t buy from these people. You will have nothing but trouble with the pups or kittens.

This is happening in the RSPCA QLD Wacol shelter as well.

The animal in question was a dog that I had rescued from the pound (where he was also to be PTS) and then I passed him onto a breed specific ‘rescue group’ and was told he’d be taken care of. 6 weeks later they surrendered him to the RSPCA because ‘he wasn’t purebred and they couldn’t make enough money off him’. She didn’t bother to tell the RSPCA that he’d been abused and had anxiety.

He sat in that shelter for 4 months with no consistent company. I watched him deteriorate. They let him out into a yard with 9 other dogs and one of them charged at him. The dog panicked and bit the other dog on his head, as a warning to stay away, but because he was ‘a lot larger than the dog who charged at him’ he had to be PTS. I did everything in my power to save him. I contacted all the correct people and then he was reassessed and found to have anxiety (finally!). 24 hours later he was again added to the PTS list.

At 3pm, I was told by the RSPCA that ‘you have until midday tomorrow to collect him or he’ll be put down’. I used social media to try and find a foster home for him and included that he had 24 hours to live. The RSPCA recieved, in their words, ‘a large influx of phone calls regarding the animals welfare’. I found him a foster home and pulled him out.

3 days later I recieved a phone call from HR at the RSPCA telling me that I was no longer welcome on campus, volunteer or employed. They told me I broke my ‘confidentiality agreement’ by saying he had 24 hours to live. What a joke!

I will never support the RSPCA again. I used to be a regular donor and buy all my pet supplies from there but after the way they treated me, I’m disgusted! They are purely looking for easy animals they can rehome and get money for quickly. The emails that staff receive from HR on a regular basis about PR and ‘keeping the public happy to keep donations coming in’ is appalling.

My partner and I rescue dogs and currently have six that we are looking after.

All are varying in ages and circumstances in which they have come to us.

To us they are like our children with a need to be cared for and nurtured like any child.

For us to not have them around would be more painful than the pain in the butts they can be at times.

We as Foster – Carers expect no return and our major concern is the welfare of the animals.

Not as it would seem that organisations like this place a monetary value on the animal rather than their

    welfare.

It is absolutely abhorrent that healthy animals can be put down without trying to find appropriate homes
    for them.

When you consider the MILLIONS of dollars donated to this charity for the welfare of these animals,

why then in this instance has some narrow minded imbecile been left to make a decision like this that
would mean that the dogs would be destroyed, rather than being given the chance of having a life by
    being adopted out.

We have made donations to this group in the past but certainly will not be making any donations in the future

It is not just WA that has problems with the RSPCA . NSW North Coast if you call the RSPCA to a horse ,cow , whatever they don’t come , I’ve seen a few horses die , because they wouldn’t Act . And I wasn’t allowed to act . Really sucks , I will NEVER call the RSPCA again , I try and find other local rescue groups that will At least try ! But they don’t have the LAW on there side like the RSPCA can use to “impound ” or “confiscate” them.
RSPCA NEEDS A NATIONAL OVERHAUL !

R S P C A Royal Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals – shame to the very name you stand for! How dare the RSPCA inflict cruelty on those loving babies. SHAME SHAME SHAME run free on the rainbow bridge Izzy, Sukey, Polly and Morris. We will grieve for you that you lost your lives – at the hands of individuals driven by money instead of humanity and a direct contradiction to the name of the very organization they are a part of. To Cath and your husband for giving these little puppies some glimmer of humanity, albeit a brief one.

This has got to be one of the saddest stories I’ve seen in a long time! This wonderful person who fostered this poor girl and her babies is a saint and I’m sure she would have been able to find homes for all of the dogs – and very good homes as well. The RSPCA basically used blackmail (what other word is there????) to get the dogs back and destroy them. These were beautiful pups who would easily have found a home. Someone needs to be held accountable for this decision to destroy a perfectly healthy family of dogs! I’m sorry but I don’t have any faith in the RSPCA any more after seeing this and other things like this…….

The RSPCA has become a large bureaucracy, receiving Government funds, which has completely lost sight of what it’s supposed to be all about. This not the first case and it’s the same all over Australia.

I just about passed out when I read that the adoption fee is $700!? Seriously? The most the SPCA here in America charges is $250 and that is to cover the cost of housing the dogs, immunizations, spaying/neutering and training so that they have a step up in their new homes. $700 isn’t an adoption fee it’s a breeders fee! Absolutely ridiculous!

Have the lunatics taken over. One of the problems when volunteer organisations become corporatised. RSPCA is now a business, not a volunteer organisation for the purpose of rescuing and rehoming animals. This is a story that should make the RSPCA executive hang their heads in shames and revisit their mission … Deeply disappointed but not surprised…

Commercialisation of any process invariably brings the almighty dollar into prominence in any decision making.

While I’m not surprised the RSPCA WA has done this, I am repelled by it as a policy and practice.

After the Black Saturday bush fires my friend operated a donation based distribution service for livestock and animal feed in the Kinglake area. The stress placed on her and the pressure brought to bear to do things ‘their way’ was enormous. I assisted on weekends myself, in between getting my life back on track.

On a number of occasions I observed their grappling mentally with her to wrest control of the distribution from her and I found myself wondering why they seemed to have such a vested interest in controlling (and eventually shutting down) the FREE stockfeed distribution she was engaged in. Donated items, donated time, donated forklift, donated containers – and the donations were not made specifically to any charity, just sent by the good people of Australia who cared enough to help us out.

And the RSPCA did this with every acre for mile upon mile seared and offering nothing to our stock and local wildlife in the way of sustenance or forage.

Perhaps the powers that be within the organisation should remember your moniker stands for Royal Society for the Protection of Animals not Real Slick Perpe-TRAITORS of Cruelty to Animals. You have been emplaced by the public and sanctioned by our head of state, authorising that ‘Royal’ in your title that you are so proud of. Perhaps that should be remembered and acted upon the next time your corporate interests collide with those of your official charter.

Threats and intimidation are usually the mien of the mafia or the mob. They certainly don’t point to a realistic, sensitive, honest, or pro-active approach to addressing the issues at hand – a sure failing in leadership ably demonstrated yet again.

Full disclosure worrying to you, RSPCA? It wouldn’t if you were doing the right thing and your ‘charitable’ practices were above board.

yes they do this to healthy rehomable animals and say it is because they cant home them or cant afford to keep them any longer than a week or two in their care. I am disgusted also with rspca as on numerous occasions I have notified them of animals being abused starving or hurt and they have never checked even after 40 or more complaints over the same animal. rspca animal rescue is a complete lie and to charge $700 for a puppy are you for real? no wonder they cant home animals! but I can bet they are paying off their mortgages on houses with their wages working there not giving a damn about mistreated animals and slaughtering perfectly fine ones cause it is too hard and too much effort for them! rspca animal rescue I believe is totally staged for tv and moneymaking purposes and always contact ANIMAL WELFARE LEAGUE now with any concerns or strays I find as they have a no kill policy (at least in S.A when I had a stray cat that was pregnant) only problem is sometimes they do not have space to take an animal or funding so you do have to look after it for awhile yourself (hence how the cat in S.A got pregnant I couldn’t catch it myself easily could only feed it and hope it came back and was there feeding when animal welfare arrived to get it)

So you all are not so caring and living toward animals after all are you, RSPCA? And with those steep “adoption” fees, it looks like you all are in it for the money, not for the love of animals. How in the world do 4 week old puppies “fail” a behavorial test? You all are full of bullshit.

And the mother dog was from a puppy mill situation from the sound of it. She was a cute little Spaniel. You all are just KILLERS, pretending to care about animals. You disgust me as much as the kill pounds here in the US.

  26. Annette | February 6, 2014 | Permalink

The price they are charging really doesn’t make sense for “recycled” animals because if the RSPCA sold them as cheap pets, charging no more than a bulk negotiated desexing for entire animals and under $150 for already desexed animals then the “backyard breeders” market would be undercut and collapse. Really RSPCA, you must change your policies so that you are more humane and affordable because your reputation is being shot to pieces with the stories that spread like wildfire on the internet. Be a little more circumspect about the people you lock swords with as well, this couple are very convincing and justifiably very angry.

A cavalier and her puppies put down, for what reason? I seriously would like to know why and that is why I am writing a letter to the Minister of Agriculture.

I have never been a supporter of the RSPCA and never will be.

I would suggest to Cath to take this matter further even better contact Today Tonight or Current Affair and let the whole community know as to what happens there.

I know it will not bring back Izzy and her pups but it would serve justice and hopefully prevent any future unnecessary killings of animals.

I have been spreading this story on Facebook and Instagram so people are aware of this ongoing issue.

General public and large companies provide donations to this animal shelter organisation but what for? So they can put a mother especially a cavalier king Charles spaniel and her pups down because she was scared, timid, skittish? Sounds to me they are full of excuses and plain lazy to give these guys a go in life.

If a gentled natured cavalier has no chance at surviving at the RSPCA what chance do other breed of dogs have?

I am hoping to get an adequate response from the Minister about this!

A similar thing happened to me I had fostered about 6 dogs for another organisation had transported them to vets for treatments, fed them & cared for them found homes for them & even done yard inspections on potential homes. The last straw for me was when I had a pug x cavalier coming to me for foster for this organisation direct from the owner all up to date with immunisations, had been sterilised so nothing to outlay on this little dog, the night before I asked the question of the boss of the business if I wanted to adopt this little dog what would the cost be to me, then all off a sudden I wasn’t a suitable home for this dog but they tried to get me to take one of the other dogs that had been with them for months…i feel this was because they could get good $$$$ for the pug x so didn’t want me to have it, how can 5 minutes prior when it was coming to me to foster so I was more then suitable to look after the dog but when I want to maybe adopt the dog I’m not suitable…I rescued a dog from another rescue mob but have never fostered again :(

The RSPCA is profit-driven and totally corrupt. I call on every animal lover to demand an investigation into the RSPCA. “Izzy was ‘typical’ of many neglected dogs; sad, skittish and scared.”

You people are totally failing to see this beyond in black and white. Genetic behavior is passed on..those puppies probably would have grown up with fear aggression, and with that, a big liability. Small dogs can and DO harm humans just as much as bigger breeds, statistics say even more.

But that’s not the problem imo. The problem is those dogs with genetic fear aggression are silently suffering every day of their lives. Euthanasia is sometimes a blessing for them, as much as it would be for nonstop physical pain.

There is NOT ENOUGH HUMAN BEINGS TO TAKE CARE OF EVERY SINGLE ONE.
If that foster person, Cath, wanted to adopt these dogs SHE SHOULD HAVE IMMEDIATELY MADE THAT KNOWN.

I’m not saying that this organization is not corrupt, and I’m not saying it isn’t tragic, and I’m not saying that Izzie and her puppies didn’t deserve every chance at life, because they did. I’m saying these are just a drop in a very large bucket, and if no one actively tried to adopt them, there are millions of other dogs euthanized who DO NOT HAVE FEAR AGGRESSION.

    • savingpets | February 6, 2014 | Permalink

There is currently no way of testing to see if Izzy’s behaviour was ‘nature or nurture’. There may have been no genetic basis for her timidity, but simply be a result of neglect.

There is no scientifically validated temperament test that would be appropriate to use on such young pups.

But even if these things weren’t true, ‘preventative killing’ in the name of somehow preventing a potential future suffering, is completely unethical.

‘Euthanasia’ is only an appropriate treatment for actual suffering, not that invented by our imagination. Especially that suffering which may not happen.

As any owner of a much loved, but ‘faulty’ pet can attest, many dogs who would fail a shelter temperament test, go on to live perfectly enjoyable lives.

But logical fallacies aside – thanks for playing along at home!

I just can’t belive this… I’m struck dumb… I’ve taken so many lost or abandoned animals to the R.S.P.C.A and have been assured that they will find good homes and be well cared for… I’ve had family pets have to go there when our landlords told us we could no longer keep our pets, and after giving my loving furry family members one last cuddle as they lick my tears off my face i was told they will be found a new home… Now I’m crying as the prospect of the death of all these animals i knew and many many animals i was never blessed to meet may have died for no apparent reason… No animal is beyond saving, even the most scarred animals who attack humans for fear of them can still be changed for the better under loving guidance and care… No animal deserves to die, least of all for “behavioral problems”. This disgusts me to a level i can’t even comprehend. All the donations i have made to this “shelter”, which over the years likely amass to a decent amount given i’m just a student on minimal wages. And yet why was i donating? what’s the point of all that money? i thought i was supporting giving animals a fresh start, another chance, a happy forever home with a new family… But no. I’m funding the murder of sweet innocent creatures. The slaughter of young pups and kittens. The massacre of a creature who could have made a world of difference for the humans who’s hearts it could have touched. But no more. Never again will i donate to that organisation. Never again will i take an animal to them. Never again will i defend them or recommend them to people. No more death. No more suffering. No more lies and no more sadness. Enough i say.

    Disgusting.

I have a 3 legged cat, who turned up in my yard, which is now in my care, I was told if I take it to the cats home (RSPCA) they would do an assessment and it would be put down because it has 3 legs. This was unacceptable so I decided to keep it.

I also had a stray little kitten that wandered in to my yard and I called the RSPCA and they had it put down at the vets straight away as it had ticks.

I mean seriously this is the easy solution ??? rather than treat the animal.

How about you actually try and save animals, especially those less fortunate that have been dumped.

Atleast try and save Animals instead of putting them all down.

Sadly our RSPCA has a very bad reputation. It needs a serious overhaul and full investigation of their policies and rules. The management of the shelters are champions at huge cover ups. This particular case is just heartbreaking. A little cavalier and her babies would have been so easy to re home, I have one myself, which was saved from a breeder. Just horrible horrible people.
