Walgett Shire Council have finished their review into their animal management programs and have concluded that they will…
…continue to use shooting as its method of euthanizing animals, following complaints over its treatment of a dog.
……
The General Manager Don Ramsland says the council has reviewed its policy and is making some changes.He says calls for council to use lethal injections to put down animals have been dismissed in favour of shooting.
“That’s the standard method of euthanasia used throughout western New South Wales,” he said.
“We’ve done a survey with neighbouring councils and I think all five councils that we approached used shooting as a method of euthanasia.”
Hey, don’t look at me like that. No one wants to kill pets. And they will be making some changes;
The policy changes include ensuring pet owners are better informed about a surrendered animal’s chances of being re-homed.
Mr Ramsland says animals will now be kept for two days at the pound, and will be photographed to provide a record of their condition.
“Quite often the animals that are surrendered to us are problem animals and the chances of re-homing are not as high as they are for say pups or something like that.
“Most people we believe would have understood that if their animals were surrendered euthanasia was a possible consequence.”
Walgett – now offering a free public shaming, before they shoot the community’s pets – yup that oughta do it…

WTF?? Shooting is not euthanasia, it is MURDER!
Two days holding limit? that’s ridiculous!
Remind me NEVER to visit Walgett or support it in any way while ever it continues to treat innocent animals in this manner! You are the ones who should be publicly shamed!
Well, at least they have admitted what we already knew, that many of these outback council pounds shoot cats and dogs.
Thanks for blogging about this. Too bad the NSW RSPCA is nowhere to be seen, unless of course it is out providing awards for those who do the shooting (ie like in the case of Gloucester pound – as I understand it)
Where is the NSW RSPCA? Why don’t they stop this barbarism? Need I ask? THe NSW RSPCA stopped caring about animal welfare decades ago.
This shooting of dogs is absolutely disgusting. What a team of neanderthals in these outback areas. No wonder people are deserting the country to live in the city. I will never bring my family to Walgett. What a bunch of hillbillies they must be to shoot dogs in cold blood.
