Nothing will stop the RSPCA for lobbying for 24hr cat containment. No matter how ineffective the laws are at controlling unowned animals. No matter how many cats have to be killed in the process…
TAMMY VEN DANGE, RSPCA ACT: We still have a lot of feral cats out there in places that are cat containment areas already, so if there’s not a mechanism for actually enforcing it and for educating people that might not know that, then it doesn’t really matter what the rules are.
When talking about ‘enforcement’ of laws that effect ‘feral’ cats – we’re talking about killing. A feral cat has exactly zero chance of anything but a swift death should it enter the pound system when cat containment laws are ‘enforced’.
The ACT has many ‘cat free’ zones already, and by their own admission this is doing practically nothing to address unowned animals. It’s logic – if a cat has no owner, it has no home to be confined in – ergo it’s going to the pound.
Cat containment – and the resulting widespread slaughter of cats, is the current policy of the RSPCA. This is taking shape in the ACT, but other states are guaranteed to follow. The RSPCA are happy to throw cats under the proverbial bus and even provide ‘euthanasia’ services for councils wanting to enforce the laws.
It is absolutely time for cat lovers to demand the RSPCA gets with the times and reverses this cat-killing policy. We need our major animal welfare group in this country to be leading from a place of compassion, not carnage.
There needs to be a law that states all animals unless those that are owned by licenced breeders must be sterilised…all breeding must incur fees to reduce the numbers bred. All animals that are lost and homeless must be sterilised and homed unless feral
They already have the entire suite of these laws in the ACT.
They don’t fucking work. For the same reason confinement doesn’t ‘work’ – you can’t inflict a law on an animal with no owner to ensure they comply (except to bring it into the pound to be culled).
I saw this news report. Nobody spoke in support of the cats. We need an organisation like Alley Cat Allies here in Australia. Sadly, there is no major organisation in Australia advocating for the only ethical, effective way to manage free-living cats: Trap Neuter Release. RSPCA, LDH and others are happy to tout cruel, ineffective management programs that result in an endless cycle of killing.
Victoria also has all the laws, but we still have roaming cats. Even some owners with cats may not comply, I was a TNR cat carer until the RSPCA decided to hit me with an all animals ban for 5 years. ALL our colonies were desexed, fed and microchipped before the RSPCA hit us…they found and poisoned 5 colonies…now we have an unknown number of cats at our colony sites, 100 non multipliers MURDERED is now a huge number of unfixed, unvetted uncared for (I’m not the only person with an animal ban) cats who live in the same places.as our previously managed colony.
NOT all licensed breeders follow the rules, look at RSPCA APPROVED farms, or even DogsVic approved kennels, many of them would be labelled cruel and thoughtlessly harsh if you looked at them with the ‘ideal’ in mind.
I hate you Royal Society for PROMOTING Cruelty to Animals.
RSPCA is not for all animals. Even their advert says we are for all animals but ring them for a deer on the freeway with a broken leg (they dont do feral animals) ring them for a cat with two broken legs (is it an owned cat then you have to find its owner is it a feral cat then we dont do ferals) Kangaroo with two broken legs trying to climb up an embankment after being hit by a car. Sorry we dont do kangaroos you should ring the ranger, ranger says you should ring rspca after 4 hours of two and froing a police officer came and shot it and so it goes on endless. So my big interest why the sudden interest in “feral cats”.
It sounds like the RSPCA in Australia is a lot different than it claims, maybe they should all be sacked and just let the animal rescue groups do the work and help some animals?
The RSPCA get millions in donations each year to “save” animals yet they prefer to MURDER them… they should be locked up for fraud and murder.
