Working hard to help homeless animals
More homes are being found for unwanted cats and dogs in Queanbeyan thanks to a major effort by Queanbeyan City Council and animal rescue organisations, who are working with Council rangers at the Pound to reduce euthanasia rates
The Queanbeyan Pound has one of the lowest euthanasia rates in NSW thanks to dedicated Council staff and welfare organisations. So far in 2012-13, just 5% of dogs and 15% of cats have been euthanised. These figures are set to compare well with 2008-09 figures when 11% of dogs and 31% of cats were euthanised.
Council has extended the time animals can stay in the pound from seven days to 21 days, giving rangers extra time to find homes for the animals.
Rescue organisations which have been a vital part of this are: ACT Rescue and Foster; Companion Animal Rescue and Adoption; Canberra Pooch Rescue; Jack Russell Rescue; Big Dog Rescue; RSPCA ACT; Homeless Hounds; Australian Working Dog Rescue Inc; ACT Animal Rescue; ACT Cat Adoption.
