The City of Austin is currently the largest No Kill city in the United States.
From Ryan Clinton, attorney, animal advocate and founder of Fix Austin, the organisation who helped drive the change:
In 2007, there were three known U.S. communities saving 90% or more of sheltered animals. Now there are nearly 100. We are winning. In 2006, there were two No Kill advocacy organizations in U.S. cities. Now there are hundreds. We are winning.
Every time a single person shares a post about the atrocities that go on at municipal shelters in the United States, we win.
Every time a regressive shelter director who chooses laziness over lifesaving is fired or resigns, we win.
Every time a bottle-baby kitten is saved by a rescue rather than killed by the needle, we win.
Every time an old dog goes home, every time a puppy is cured of parvo, every time a community cat is altered and released, we win.
Every time one of our posts is shared so many times that, out of fear, a PETA-backing shelter-killing apologist asks all of her friends to try to trick Facebook into deleting our posts, we win.
Every time an animal goes out of a shelter’s front door into the loving arms of a new adopter instead of out the back door in a body bag, we win.
Those who fight shelter reform are on the wrong side of history.
Lifesaving prevails. Love prevails. Kindness prevails. Care prevails. We are winning.
