100 cats (and 35 ‘other’ animals) have been ‘rescued’ from a property by the RSPCA WA. But even before the cats are in carriers, there is discussion about how many will be “put to sleep”…

The RSPCA says that even before the raid, they were at full capacity with animals. But I’ve yet to see a call go out for foster carers and all adoptions are closed for 24hrs.

There are some ‘almost certainties’ with this kind of raid. These cats will almost certainly have a parasite load and be suffering from common, treatable illness like cat flu and ringworm. These cats will almost certainly be emotionally traumatised and needing behavioural rehabilitation. Most will almost certainly be wary of strangers (and probably acting ‘feral’) as the one care-giver they’ve known is gone, their lives have been upended and they’ve been moved to a totally foreign environment.

None of these are acceptable reasons to kill these cats.

How many of these cats survive being ‘rescued’ will really be a test of the RSPCA WA’s new CEO David van Ooran’s mettle. Will he work through the christmas holidays to save their lives – or will he turn to killing as a way to make his animal issues go away?

UPDATE – 10:40am

From the RSPCA WA Facebook page…

“RSPCA WA …. The RSPCA appreciates the offer of alternative care venues, but it would be irresponsible to place the animals elsewhere due to infection control issues.”

So with no adoptions and an overstuffed shelter, the RSPCA WA is telling rescue groups they don’t need, nor want their help.

Wow. Just wow.

I genuinely fear for the lives of these cats.
