There should be celebrations at the RSPCA NSW, but as yet I’ve not seen the media release go out.
13,000 less pet intakes in a single year!
That’s around 30% less pets. Or over 1,000 pets each month that the organisation didn’t need to process. Would this leave more resources to be put towards pet rehabilitation? Would a greater number of animals leave alive?
In 2010/11 the RSPCA NSW stats looked like this;
41,678 total intakes
– 20,975 dogs
– 20,703 cats
The RSPCA NSW stats for the current 2011/12 year, shows the following;
28,398 total intakes (13,280 less pets)
– 11,989 dogs (8986 less dogs)
– 16,409 cats (4,292 less cats)
How did the drop in intakes affect outcomes for pets?
2010/11 – 41,678 total intakes (5,509 returned)
36,169 unclaimed – 21,510 killed
= 59% of unclaimed intakes killed
2011/12 – 28,398 total intakes (1,246 returned)
27,152 unclaimed – 14,393 killed
= 53% of unclaimed intakes killed
Even with an enormous drop in intakes, the organisation is still killing 1 in every 2 pets entering their facilities (unfortunately, they’ve not given the numbers for cat and dog reclaims so I can’t break this down further).

So just how many less pets would need to enter your shelters before we’d see your kill rate drop, Mr Coleman?
If these stats are true wouldn’t it be greatly reduced if all the RSPCA joined forces with the animal rescue groups?
After all isn’t that what the RSPCA are supposed to do, help all creatures great and small.
Come on RSPCA, share your wealth to help the animals instead of filling your pockets with money. The government gives the RSPCA huge amounts ( millions actually) to help the animals. Share the money with the rescue groups to succeed in the reduction of killing.
50% of animals are killed at the RSPCA and that’s way too many.
This ratio could be reduced if they really do mean they want to help all creatures great and small.
Animal groups rely 100% on public donations and the RSPCA get millions every year from the government. But it’s the rescue groups who are doing what the RSPCA are paid to do and DONT DO IT.
Open your heart and your cheque account RSPCA and put a stop to this high amount of killing. — please.
