The two biggest champions of WA’s new cat laws, were without a doubt the RSPCA WA and the Cat Haven.
I’ve requested from the WA government, the full list of grant recipients and the amounts given. And you’ll never guess who the two biggest benefactors were? Go on. Have a guess…

The RSPCA and Cat Haven have been gifted nearly a million dollars combined, simply to build two big cat pounds in Perth – one north, one south of the river.
Given all we know about impounding cats (that it doesn’t work out so great for the cats), this is a very sad result indeed.
Some other interesting facts about the $3m WA Cat Act grant program, “aimed at reducing the high proportion of stray cats in Western Australia”.
$1,900,000 – Amount spent on impound facilities
$260,000 – Amount spent on ‘miscellaneous expenses’ (traps, registration systems)
$690,000 – Amount spent on sterilisation programs
Meaning that for every one dollar being spent on programs designed to help cats and keep them out of pounds, three dollars is being spent on resources for trapping (and likely killing) cats.
Sure that will turn out fine.

Not surprised at all. I thought something was up when the cat haven had an article in the paper last week saying they had seen a reduction in in the number of cats coming in yet the shelter I volunteer at ( the Animal Protection Society of WA) has seen an increase in people bringing cats to us and was in the local paper just a couple of weeks ago stating this
