Tara, a five-year-old German Shepherd, escaped from the backyard of Tania’s Scarness home along with the family’s other dog, Diesel.
As sometimes happens when dogs get loose, Tara got into trouble with the neighbours – allegedly having an altercation with another dog. She was taken to the Hervey Bay pound, operated by the Fraser Coast Regional Council.
Diesel is yet to be located.
Tara was registered and there was no report of her causing issue with Council in the past. But because of the incident the council declared Tara as a ‘menacing’ dog. It would be required that the family build 1.8m fencing before she could be released. The family paid for and built the fence.
However, when they next contacted council about bringing Tara home, they were told their dog was already dead.
“Tara was part of the family,” Tania said.
“She was just a good dog.”
Fraser Coast Deputy Mayor George Seymour said the council was talking with Tania and her family to resolve “the issue”. Which – given ‘the issue’ is an dead dog – is unlikely to offer the heartbroken family much comfort.
How much longer will we accept paying for this broken system that fails to respect and protect our family members?
