Young Shire Council shovelled out a great steaming pile of blame the public this week, when asked by the local media why they weren’t doing more to save their community’s animals.
Young Shire Council Pound Director Craig Filmer admitted parvo outbreaks were “common” in the facility but that there was no point in trying to prevent them as:
“… spending $100 to $200 on vaccinations to prevent parvovirus was pointless when most of the animals would be destroyed within seven days of arrival.”
Mr Filmer also confirmed Council:
“… were not keen to use social media or conduct a marketing campaign.”
… to save the animals in their ‘care’. I mean why would they, when they could just kill them.
Council General Manager Peter Vlatko joined the chorus condemning animals for entering the Council pound at all, saying:
… the onus for the care of the animals should be on the owners in the first place and questioned why council should pick up the costs for their irresponsibility.
So when a dog catches parvo and dies without so much as a Facebook post alerting to the community to its existence – that is absolutely 100% your fault. You hear that? YOUR fault.

This is utterly outrageous treatment of our pets in 2013. Please do two things – contact the local paper who wrote the story to thank them for taking an interest in the story and contact Young Shire Council to let them know that this simply isn’t good enough.
I have never heard such a slack reply for the animals who apparently have no rights to life.Young Shire Council Pound Director Craig Filmer runs a shelter that is simular to the Nazi death camps get rid of him sack him now what a piece of sh*t he is.As for the other revolting person Council General Manager Peter Vlatko he is disgusting he doesn’t even rate as a human being
GREAT IDEA Kim. Let’s sack them both.. it’s time !!
When is the neglect going to stop,I am sick to death of people with disgusting attitudes killing needlessly.Young Council needs a big wake up call the public do not support this and I will spread the word how Young Council treats its Companion Animals
who hired these disgusting people taking the easy way out. You have to work hard to rescue, rehome, return and adopt. Maybe their pay is bonus based on kill rates???
Utterly disgraceful council but aided by the Companion Animal Act when this is the only paragraph in the whole of the act on finding alternatives to killing:
(5) Before destroying a seized or surrendered animal as authorised by subsection (1), it is the duty of the council concerned to consider whether there is an alternative action to that of destroying the animal and (if practicable) to adopt any such alternative.
No defining of what is ‘practicable’ and Filmer can take it any way he wants and be within the law.
Peter Vlatko and Craig Filmer should be ASHAMED of themselves for their “who cares about animals” attitude. Got news for you, YOUNG COUNCIL – WE DO!!!
pull your fingers out, find some compassion (although I doubt either of you have it, from past experience) and try and find a solution to this problem that is agreeable TO EVERYBODY and that is within the law.
SHAME, SHAME SHAME.. YOUNG COUNCIL.
Dear Peter Vlatko and Craig Filmer,
We were very concerned and deeply upset to read the recent newspaper article about Young Shire Council and its treatment of animals in its care.
It is our responsibility as humans to make every effort to fully care for the lives and well being of all animals in our jurisdiction.
I trust that from here on you will work to save the lives and properly rehome every single animal that is in your care.
Sincerely,
Jasmine Alexandra
