G2Z through progressive animal management, part 2 – Mark Kumpf
Offsite pet adoptions
– Soda is convenient – you only have to walk 20 feet.
– We need to make our inventory available
– We’re competing with pet stores
– Pet shops generally have a bad image – happy to partner with rescue groups. Started with large chains, but now smaller business want to get involved.
– People don’t want to go to shelters – they’re gloomy. They’re where the rubbish tip is
– Take the pets to where the people are
– Ask businesses for donations & help advertise
– Parking lots, malls
Onsite events
– Make your place inviting
– Adoptions, festivals, open houses (every second sunday of the month), rescue groups can visit?
– Increases adoptions and aid in fundraising
Training classes
– Free classes for *all* pets – preventative behaviourist.
– Positive strategies to keep pets with their families.
– Open to dog trainers and community groups.
– Prevents bites, promotes responsible behaviours
Promote licencing
– Save lives while generating revenue
– Advertising, mailers, newspaper, tv
– ‘Sell’ the benefits – ‘It’s your dog’s ticket home’
Work with the community
– Animal control, animal rescue and shelters need to work together. No one can do it alone.
– We need to work on placing the maximum number of pets into the community.
Local rescue groups
– Align with anyone willing to help
– AKC groups, rescue partners, vets
– Make it simple to rescue an animal from your shelter
– If you are a large animal rescue organisation and you’re not working with local rescues, then you’re killing pets and you don’t need to be doing that. If you are taking in animals and simply euthanaising them after their impound period, then you are not providing humane euthanasia.
Professional and positive interactions, with an emphasis on customer service.
Would you want to visit your shelter? Could you be more inviting? Clean, organised.
Appearance – doesn’t need to be uniforms, can be a ‘softer’ side
Attitude – positive, we will save more lives
Action – if we don’t do it, who will?
Education over enforcement – if we can convince you to do what to do because its the right thing to do, rather than tell you to do it, we get much further.
Community taskforces
– Get out there and meet your friends
– Listening and solving problems, keep pets out of shelters (reduces euthanasia)
