I get this feedback practically daily; everyone is doing their best… what do you want pounds to do… why can’t everyone stop criticising each other and just get along?
Then you see something like this – a pound who has for probably several decades maintained a 10% rehoming rate for dogs and a 90% kill rate for cats, suddenly getting out there and adopting some pets.
And all because their community stuck a foot firmly up their ass.
Pound Pets looking for a home
Today, The News kicks off our new Pound Pets campaign to help animals at the Greater Shepparton Animal Shelter find a home. Have a look at what animals are available this week.
There is an associated article in the newspaper, which is great – lovely picture, friendly smiling staff member – perfection.
Right up until the Council opens their mouths, obviously;
(Greater Shepparton City Council director of business Justin Finlayson) also stressed the importance of responsible pet ownership. He said it was key to reducing the number of animals that end up at the shelter in the first instance.
Of course he did. Because it’s the terrible, awful, irresponsible public’s fault that this pound has a history of killing the majority of pets who enter their care.
Since July last year, the animal shelter has found homes for 123 dogs and 64 cats.
By my calculations that’s one dog adopted every two days. And one cat a week. Gosh – I hope they didn’t break a sweat with such a cray cray workload; with an adopter happening to wander through the gates… every now and again.
Despite Council’s efforts, this ‘Save our Pets’ initiative has actually been really well executed by the newspaper. Could the terrible, awful, irresponsible public now please step up, promote the hell out of it, visit Shepparton and save these pets? The best share link is probably this one:

Great work!! I hope sooner every council/pound/shelter will do the same. And it only begins with those working in the organization who have compassion :)
And hopefully an end to BSL!
FANTASTIC job – and a wonderfully written piece. ;)
Still no mention of working with breed specific rescue , and a revamp of the method of temp testing they use , until then dogs and cats will continue to be PTS .. Some 600 dogs and 900 cats last year. As for responsible ownership , well can’t remember the last time the animal laws had an open day / microchipping or education day .
