I can only go on what i have read about you but can you give us details and reasons why you put these animals down? I live in UK and we have the RSPCA here and to my knowledge they never put a healthy animal to sleep. Is it because you have to save money at this shelter, so it’s easier to put them a sleep rather then the expense of adopting them out. Could you please make a statement and let us all the the circumstances of their departure from this world. How can anyone put healthy animals asleep that were up for adoption. Questions and we would like answers please

This is sickening and they are beast…killing poor mama’s ….god forbide …I hope bad Karma comes this bastard that did this…
It make me sick to think they have no hearts,, stop the puppy mills and it will stop the killing of mummy dogs….

      • taylor drive | April 8, 2013 | Permalink

seems they have become the worst kind of puppy mill selling puppies and killing the momma when no more need of her.
why were animals that money was spent on to put in the adoption rooms killed. why were healthy animals rated adoptable to have money spent on them for neutering etc killed what kind of obese misappropriation of funds spent is this???????

If this is the case and it is proven I will no longer be sending any more donations and will cross the rspca out of my will.

start a petition to stop such abuse that is what we do in the USA…this is rediculous

    • SHIRLEY | April 8, 2013 | Permalink

Why?, why?, why?,That is the question! Why would you or anyone with a compassionate heart do such a thing to these animals that could & would have a chance to be someones pet. You don’t belong in a place like that to work & be a decision maker of what becomes of these poor dogs, who don’t have a voice in what happens to them. You are disgusting, if I have a say in this, you would be fired..

It is sickening ….Those people should not be there They are irresponsible, they are not humans and they should not be allowed to make decisions..They certainly don’t have feelings….They should be charged and immediately dismissed..Never allowed to care about animals……

Ann you obviously don’t know the rspca very well in the uk, they put to sleep 60,000 thousand healthy animals a year not only that but they use bolt guns on some of them the rspca here in the uk are no better than in australia they are the one organisation that i would never give money to so don’t support them

What is her answer. Surely she must answer for this. Reason??? Our local RSPCA does not put down adoptable dogs, so what is the justification for this?? Looking forward to the answer.

What is this women’s agenda…? as far as I can see she has put to sleep fur baby’s that would have found new homes to go to.
As for what she did as well to this mummy fur bay that’s disgusting.
As far as I’m concerned she is not the right person for this position. she has no compassion for these poor unfortunate fur babies, who through no fault of their won find themselves at this facility.
I thought the RSPCA was there to protect the rights of all animals….This lady needs to read the charter.

ALL SHELTERS SHOULD BE MADE NO KILL

Then we wouldn’t have something so disgusting as this lady’s acts of putting to sleep perfectly healthy re home able fur babies…….

Although I agree with you whole heartedly Jan, there are several places that “claim” to keep healthy pets until they are adoptable, but due to lack of funds and / or Company policies (that means the person in charge above the shelters managers head) many healthy adoptable animals are unfortunately “killed” every day.

It seems that people are more than happy to contribute to the death of animals rather than spay/neutering them, and stopping “animal” (puppy mills) . I don’t say all people, because there are bleeding-hearts (myself included) that would rather be the ones who can “try” to help support the shelters that are no kill…

I don’t have an explanation for why this person who manages a place in Queensland, Australia doesn’t buck the system and stop the killings…only she can answer that, and I really wish she would

Are there any means of reaching the right people (the ones that are so unfair to animals) by this site ?
I see we all agree on respect of animals, but are the managers going to read this and to feel a pressure to change ?Is there a postal address or another email address or another site where we can comment this non adequate behavior ?
Let’s send lots of love to the animals and let’s send messages so that their angel, they must have one like everybody, talks to their heart one day … As they are probably the most in lack of love to act like that …

Had doubts about the rspca in the past but this confirms it. Unless a dog is uncontrollably vicious it should never be killed i always thought that this was the rspca’s role but it seems its more about the new boss looking good.

Shame on you i will never donate again but it will go to non kill shelters you should be shown up if not sacked

  11. Patty van Zeist | April 7, 2013 | Permalink

It seems to be that the RSPCA just needs a dog to bring money in. The mother was just good enough for the puppies to feed them so they could be sold.
This is not better than a dogbreeder. How can a person be so cruel to put the dog and cats asleep who could get a new home. What a terrible person this woman is. I hope se will get her punishment. I did not know that the RSPCA in the Uk did kil dogs wit guns, in which year we live? In 1500? How cruel!!!! It seems always to be that not the right persons do the work for the RSPCA. May be we can ask for help at some famous people, to set up good shelter. Like Angela Jolie, Brad Pritt, they have the financials to do this.

  12. Gladys | April 7, 2013 | Permalink

We are a non destruct rescue in the UK and we would not think of doing PTS unless a vet advise due to ill health and that the dog was suffering. Other than that we will do all we can to get the dogs healthy and on to a new home.

The RSPCA here in the UK are one of the biggest destroyers as well and wont let anyone else save the dogs. Its disgusting what right to they have to take lives !!

The New Shelter Manager should be sacked from her job straight away and the news spread every where so people know what she has been doing and being smug about it. Some one needs to get in there and find out what is going on and protest at the Shelter so the Manager is in no doubt how people feel about her.

We all fight hard in the UK to save all the pound dogs and are terribly upset if a Dog Warden wont give time to find a space and save them and we lose one.
Come on please let everyone know what is going on as it is the only way to save the dogs Shout loud.!!

  13. memory murphy | April 7, 2013 | Permalink

This woman definitely needs to be investigated. From what I cangather she haas her own agenda and is the wrong person for this job. The RSPCA should be in the business of saving animals, it is NOT a slaughter house!!

Have a look at the RSPCA in Perth also. They took a large number of dogs away from a property in Perth. Almost all of them were euthanized . They were being looked after, but someone at RSPCA thought they would big time themselves and show the public how good they were. I will never donate to them again!

what is wrong with these unfeeling morons that are in charge of our pounds have they no feelings at all they must have heart as cold as ice
they need people running our pounds that have a bit of compassion

    • nutto | April 8, 2013 | Permalink

When organizations have such rotten policies, why would people of compassion want to work for them? Kind-hearted people working in kill shelters don’t last long, they either burn out and quit, or become inured to the killing going on around them. It’s a vicious cycle resulting in cruel institutions retaining only cruel people.

  16. Mark | April 7, 2013 | Permalink

The RSPCA should be held responsible for it’s actions. If a person from the RSPCA comes to ask for donations I would ask them a lot of questions, and not donate any money unless they prove that they are a reasonable group who also LISTEN to other rescue groups.

  17. Lesley | April 7, 2013 | Permalink

No animal should be euthanized unless it is so savage or, is ill to the point of non-recovery when euthanasia would be the kinder course of action, however, it appears in this case that these dogs were euthanized at the whim of the warden/shelter manager, almost as if she didn’t like the four dogs concerned so she just put them down, if this is the case, it certainly makes her unfit to be in the position she is in. All four dogs had passed their behavioural/temperament tests and were ready for adoption so there does not appear to be any reason for them being euthanized, it does appear on the face of it, that these dogs were euthanized for the sake of it and not for any reason other than the pound manager’s wishes! Absolutely appalling! Likewise, I will never ever donate to the RSPCA again, although I have donated regularly in the past.

They MUST BE AWARE OF THE PUBLIC’S CONDEMNATION TO BLOCK THEIR E-MAIL, so we must ensure that something is done about this, and seen to be done!

THOU SHALT NOT KILL, surely God did not say Dogs should be killed. Where are the morals, ethics and respect for life. Tremendously sad, and such a empty loss. When they need them, nothing will be there.

It is times like this I am embarrased to call myself an Australian. My heart, love and prayers go out to these beautiful fur babies and bad karma to this woman. I too have always had doubts about the RSPCA and tomorrow I will be ringing up and canelling my animal insurance with them.

    • Rebecca | April 7, 2013 | Permalink

If more people cancelled their insurance with your SPCA, they would be FORCED to investigate this woman as this would be really bad for business. Good for you!

Some people relish being in control of life and death – this obviously applies to this terrible woman, I suppose it gives her the feeling of power!! It could also be financially beneficial for her to kill these poor dogs – there usually is some money aspect when human beings act the way they do. The RSPCA (of which I am a member) should adopt the policy of the Dogs Trust, (I am also a member of this organisation), as they are the ones who say they would never put a healthy dog down. This woman needs the sack and someone who has the interest and love of dogs put in her place. They say the UK is a country of animal lovers, well I consider this to be a big joke, but if we are, I dread to think what other countries are like!! In every country there are good people and we hope that they will have some influence on the evil ones who are sadly in larger numbers – let’s hope some good people come forward in Cairns to right this wrong.

It is time the truth is known… I found a dog and the council took him to the pound in Adelaide. I waited a couple days as instructed and called to as to adopt him as he was beautiful. The pound told me that unless the “owners” came forward that healthy 7yr old dog was to die.. I was distraught and crying on the phone and saying i didn’t care how old he was I wanted to adopt him. They said because of his age he wouldn’t pass the medical so he was sure to be euthanised. after waiting the right amount of time a friend and I went in and claimed to be the owners and rescued him from death.. Unbelievable we had to lie to save his life. That was 3 years ago and he is a happy healthy boy still!!..It is all about the money it is cheaper to kill them than to rehome them.. very sad world we live in…. Wake up Australia the RSPCA are not about saving lives but making money…..

I sure hope someone is able to do something about this new manager – obviously he/she doesn’t like animals.

Such a third world thing to do in what likes to think is a first world country. Obviously not, if this shelter manager fancies her Doctor Death role. What is wrong with people? To kill healthy dogs like this is a disgrace! Especially the Sharpei breed, which came back from extinction. This must be the only shelter in the world with exactly four dogs in it! I have more than double that number as a foster parent and some of my foster have been with me for years as they cannot be rehomed. Bring this shelter manager under the spotlight. Publically name and shame.

It is about time that stricter rules be applied to shelters and that the people employed have some integrity and compassion for the innocent animals in their care…What kind of people are we hiring? Who is responsible for their actions and what oversight committee is there, what nspections are there on a regular basis?…and the town needs to make sure that if there is even the smallest whisper that abuse and killing is taking place that it is not overlooked through laziness and self absorption.
THis is shameful and needs investigation..what are these shelters for, but to help the animals…that should always be their primary focus…and put this women on suspension, without pay, until it is sorted out…Where do they find these degenerate people and what is the matter with the RSPCA, maybe they need a house cleaning and get rid of the garbage running the place…

  28. Kim Rogers | April 8, 2013 | Permalink

You should be ashamed of yourself for taking a perfectly heathy life…Especially a mama dog that just supplied you with money from the adoption of her babies…There are people out there some good that would love to have had one of these dogs that you so nicely destroyed. Karma will bite you in the ass hopefully sooner than later, you are heartless and deserve to go straight to hell.

  29. Connie | April 8, 2013 | Permalink

Why will you not give these animals at 3 -6 month’s in your shelter especially after they have been spayed and neutered to find a home and family to love them. Especially when they are ready for adoption and then instead of killing them send them onto a no kill rescue center. And let them try to find a home for them. Shame on you when you know about these places, like North Shore Animal League. It is unnecessary to kill immediately.

  30. Lesley | April 8, 2013 | Permalink

Its all about money, plain & simple. Targets to meet, while keeping expenditure to a minimum. The animals aren’t being considered here. Just the balancing of the books & being A GOOD employee/manager. Whatever happened to principle and concern for other lives here. I hope she can live with herself & sleep peacefully. But wish for her dreams to be haunted by the animals she has “executed!!!”

This woman should be embarrassed to be seen in public.

  33. Tammy | April 8, 2013 | Permalink

I was so saddened and yes disgusted that the practice of killing treatable dogs is happening at your shelter. It does not cost you to adopt them out, in fact it saves you money because the adopter incurs the expense of treatment and food. There is no excuse. You have to be an animal lover to be in this position. If not, you belong in a different one that does not “take care” of animals. Shape up or ship out!

As a former fundraiser for the Cairns RSPCA there is no excuse for killing these animals. There are ample funds available from the former fund raising group if the sheleter is short of funds. It is no wonder most of the staff have left and I really feel for the vet who has had tp put down and kill these animals. This acyion needs to be ivestigated at the highest level of the RSPCA and by the way there were also cats killed who were neutered and micto chipped ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  43. RSPCA Qld | April 8, 2013 | Permalink

Everyone who works and volunteers at the RSPCA does so because they love animals. Quite obviously the last thing they want to do is to put an animal to sleep that they believe could be successfully rehomed. A small number of dogs originally had their behaviour assessments done by one staff member who was unfortunately relatively inexperienced. This goes against our policy as BA’s are meant to be done with at least two staff members present to ensure the dog has the best chance of survival. This is because a dog may react badly to one person while it responds well to another.

Lila had been with the RSPCA for two months without any offers of adoption before a highly experienced Care Centre Manager from another region came to Cairns to conduct training. Lila was continuing to show troubling behaviour and was retested and failed, mainly in the child/stranger area of the assessment. This was the basis of the euthanasia decision. Unfortunately our new Manager is being blamed for this decision when in fact in was a very experienced manager with a great adoption and save rate record that actually made the call.

We go to enormous lengths to save every animal and treat it as an individual. However we simply cannot adopt animals into the community that could cause damage to other animals or humans. The behavioural assessment test is obviously open to interpretation. However we are constantly trying to get it as close as possible to the balance of saving more lives and minimising the potential risk to animals and people.

People should try to understand that releasing an animal into the community that has the potential to harm anyone, especially a child, is not only irresponsible but could severely affect the rehoming prospects of thousands of other animals in RSPCA Qld’s care. A tragic incident would inevitably push people to pet shops, backyard breeders and the internet rather than choosing to adopt from a Care Centre or rescue group. RSPCA Qld now rehomes more animals than any other animal welfare organisation in Australia and we will continue to strive for the best outcome for all animals. That is, after all, what it’s all about.

      So
      Blue
      Bella
      Boofy
      and Lila

Had all been previously available for adoption, but then were all deemed unsavably aggressive.

      At the same time,
      Sasha
      Bess
      Zepha

were also previously up for adoption, but then were also killed.

Did they also become untreatably aggressive?

If no one noticed it is now the “norm” at spcas to put healthy animals to sleep, its been happening for along, long time. I do not support the spca/nspca as they collect in the name of saving animals but 99.9% of these animals are euthanased!Wish that all spcas would be closed & that all the animals were freed.

  45. Mark | April 14, 2013 | Permalink

It seems strange that the three dogs called Boofy,Blue and Bella are from the same litter, yet all of them failed these “tests”? Are dogs which grew up, say on farms, ever considered to be rehomed to that environment?
Why is the Cairns RSPCA e-mail blocked?
I have sent a letter to the Mayor of Cairns to ask his opinion. The e-mail address is [email protected].
