You’d think pounds would BEG rescue groups to help them, by taking sick & injured dogs and at their own cost, offer them treatment & care.
Why then, does this keep happening?
A young dog with an eye injury sits untreated in a pound for more than a week, only to have pound staff decide that killing her at the end of the impound period would be preferable to releasing her to the pet lovers willing to save her.
Please read Jade’s story below.
“Today I was notified of Jade, a staffy cross at Shepparton pound. Her photo shows clearly she has a horrific eye injury and her pain must be excruciating.
(Saving Pets note – with the injury she has, Jade will be completely unable to blink and will probably need her eye removed)
The Code of Practice states she must assessed immediately by a veterinary practitioner and be relieved of pain. Yet this girl has spent 13 nights in a concrete pen. She is microchipped yet her owners can’t be contacted so her time is up in 24 hours.
Reputable rescue groups have called Shepparton pound and Shepparton council and offered to pay for Jades adoption fee and all her medical treatment. All calls made to council and pound have been met with resistance, evasive answers and a firm no. Jade is not available, it would appear she is destined to be killed.
So here we have, help is at hand, at NO financial cost to Shepparton council – yet it would seem this council pound would rather kill Jade than allow a reputable rescue group to take care of this girl.
….
Councillor Jenny Houlihan was elected the new Mayor of Greater Shepparton in November 2012. Please email Cr Houlihan and ask her if she has visited the pound and what plans are in the pipeline to reduce the abhorrent high kill rate email: [email protected]
Greater Shepparton Council’s Domestic Animal Management Plan shows they take in just 1,000 dogs a year. 55% of them end up dead (10% are rehomed).
90% of 800 cats are also killed.
10% dog rehoming and killing dogs with rescue ready to take them. Remember; YOU are to blame for shelter killing.
I have emailed Jenny Houlihan to try and save Jade.Could every body who reads this do so as well.
Hi there, further to my email above I would like to inform Jenny has replied to me re assuring me Jade “is well, was not in pain and has been at home with her family for more than week”.
I have also read the follow up history which confirms the above email.
Keep it raising the public’s awareness. I love reading your blog.
