Some people who call themselves animal lovers claim that they want to see the end of killing in shelters, but still support laws which target ‘pit bulls’ and ‘pit bull type’ dogs just for being the breed they are.
Just to be clear, these two positions are in direct conflict with each other. We will never see the end of killing healthy, treatable pets, when a significant population of those pets are killed simply for how they look. There is no No Kill where there is BSL.
Some people who call themselves animal lovers claim that they want to see the end of killing in shelters, but still baulk at supporting trap, desex and return programs for untame cats.
These two positions are in direct conflict with each other. We will never see the end of wholesale killing of the majority of shelter cat intakes, when we refuse to offer options other than death for those who are unsuitable to be house pets. There is no No Kill without TNR.
It is up to us all, to challenge those who continue to claim they want to see the killing of shelter pets to end, but who at the same time refuse to put in place – or actively resist – the programs that would make it a reality. These people are no friends of animals.
There is no longer room in our industry for the ‘advocate lite’. You either are for killing, are happy to condone its use in pet population control and support condemning shelter workers to the miserable job of killing now and into the future – OR you refuse to accept the killing of our companion animals simply for convenience and will do what it takes to make the killing end today.
