Broken Hill, you have a problem.
In 2006/07 you made the ‘worst of the worst’ list for NSW, killing 651 pets (or 75%) and appallingly you killed every single impounded cat.
In 2007/08 you disgraced yourself again, killing even more animals – with 720 pets losing their lives. The Strategic Companion Animals Management Plan for that year confirmed the worst;
Animals that are not collected or adopted are held for the statutory periods following which time elapses, animals (sic) are humanely euthanised. Currently, 13 animals per week or 1.9 animals per day are euthanised. It is anticipated that improved management as a result of this plan will reduce the current euthanasia rate of 81% to 60%.
All lost and surrendered animals are impounded with Dr Guillame Tabateau (known locally as Dr Tabby) at Broken Hill Veterinary Clinic.
Not much has changed since 2006. Dr Tabby is still continuing to fail to protect the community’s most vulnerable animals. Worse, council is still using tax payer’s money
– YOUR money – to pay him to kill hundreds of pets every year.
As more and more communities eliminate shelter killing entirely, laggard councils must be held to account. Broken Hill, if you care about your animals, take the time to contact council and ask; why are you still tendering to Broken Hill Vet Clinic?

Despite attempts to deal with Dr Tabby to save lives from the Broken Hill region his lust for the almighty dollar has hindered every attempt. He sees fit to overcharge to the extreme for even the simplest of vaccinations and flatly refuses to microchip with the excuse that he does not desire the paperwork that it may cause him in the future. He also flatly refuses to release to any organisation with a 16(d) exemption stating that they must pay him for release. His stance is backed entirely by the newly appointed Animal Control Officer with statements from her to the point of “If you don’t want to pay for the dogs, look elsewhere…”. The attitude towards companion animals there is clearly about profits, not welfare. If Dr Pet Death cannot make a dollar from an impounded animal then he happily disposes of it and invoices council. Rarely have we come across a person who seemed so happy to line his pockets with gold at the expense of the taxpayers and the lives of animals.
What a disgrace this pound is!
One can only hope in reincarnation for this ‘vet’ – perhaps he could come back as abused and homeless animal!
How can he stay registered as a vet if he has such a poor attitude to microchipping – isn’t it compulsory?
I pay taxes etc and there needs to be an inquiry to how councils spend money on abandoned/lost pets.
