Cat abuse is rife in Victoria.
RSPCA Victoria’s inspectorate services manager Greg Boland labelled the attack “cowardly” and “extremely disturbing”. RSPCA figures tallied 1572 incidents of cruelty against cats in the 2008-09 financial year; up more than 50 on the previous year.
But in the ultimate effort ‘blaming the victim’;
Mr Boland said Victoria’s booming stray cat population – estimated to be about 500,000, and rising – was a potential cause.
Yeah, it’s definitely that. Not the painting of cats as shadowy, invasive pests that should be trapped, during this third year of ‘Who’s for Cats’ campaign.

Dr Harry has come out swinging at the insensitively flippant naming of the ‘Curiosity’ cat bait, which plays on the proverb “curiosity killed the cat”;
“As to the name given to this particular substance, I find it somewhat offensive. As a cat breeder for over 25 years I consider myself to be thoroughly responsible in the management of my cats and the use of such a derogatory name I find to be ill conceived, ill humoured and in a word, sick.”
Go Dr H!

It is now an offence in Wyndham for dogs on their owners’ property to act aggressively towards people or animals walking past their yards.
Under the new law, it will be an offence for dogs to behave in an offensive or threatening way by physically striking, biting or jumping at people or animals beyond the boundary of the property the dog is on.
Owners of offending dogs can be fined $234 if attempts by council officers to educate them to change the dogs’ behaviour do not work. Offending dogs will also be declared menacing and their owners made to put up signs at property entrances warning people of a menacing dog.

The fallout from the recent Gold Coast City Council ruling that American Staffordshire Terriers and ‘pit bulls’ are the same dog continues;
Registrations of American staffordshire terriers have been frozen as the Gold Coast City Council comes to grips with a controversial court ruling.
The freeze puts Gold Coast American staffy owners at risk of a $200 on-the-spot fine for breaching laws requiring registration of dogs more than three months old.
A council memo, obtained by the Bulletin, reveals that the council has ordered staff not to register American staffies or crossbreeds, or process any transfers of ownership.
Separately, the council has warned that American staffies found wandering at large could be destroyed as a restricted breed.

It took Christie Keith, a US blogger from Pet Connection to nail the problem with the Australian ‘oodle’ situation. She comments on The Australian Newspaper’s feature on designer dogs;
The problem with “designer dogs” is not that they’re not “purebred,” it’s that they’re mostly being mass-produced for profit by people who have no freaking clue how to evaluate canine health or temperament.
