Greyhound owners are a funny bunch – we love to dress our dogs up in many different ways. And because greyhounds are so laid back and calm, they happily tolerate this. Pretty collars, cosy coats, costumes for fancy dress competitions… and Adopt Me vests. We use the vests on all our greyhounds at all our promotions, and have so many positive comments. Children in particular love to see the greyhounds wearing their “bathers”. We’ve never had one person confuse a GAP greyhound wearing a vest with one that was about to be taken to a track to race.

The Greyhound Adoption Program is part of the Victorian racing community. And if one of our dogs wearing an Adopt Me vest happens to “remind people of all those worries or misconceptions they have about greyhounds” then that’s OK too as it provides us with an opportunity to dispel these same worries or misconceptions.

No ones ever mistaken a greyhound in an adoption vest for a greyhound in a racing vest? How could you measure whether that were true?

Snap judgements are a beast. Its hard to detect the exact moment that turned you on or off to something; even harder to get people to tell you the true reason behind an emotional reaction.

Certainly greyhounds are engaging in person and make fantastic pets; I think one of the best things anyone could do would be to get know this breed.

But if I had to choose to dress my adoptee animal up as what I wanted it to be in future, or dress it in the clothing associated with its past – then explain to people why it’s past is no longer relevant – personally I’d simplify and just leave the racing gear where it belongs… at the track.
