Some bad news for cats; Charles Sturt Council in Adelaide has set a deadline of a month for removal of the feral cats living on the West Beach foreshore by rescue.
Some really bad news for cats; the rescue group involved (the West Beach rock cats supporters group) haven’t been trained on using the council installed cat traps and as such aren’t able to access them despite this incredibly tight deadline.
Some really, really bad news for cats; the rescue group says that while it has caged, desexed and microchipped 34 cats, it is impossible to gain the remaining cats’ trust in just four weeks.
“To be honest it felt ridiculous, because anyone who knows anything about the trapping of a non-domesticated cat, particularly in the inclement winter weather we’ve been having, would understand that that’s an unreasonable thing to expect of us.”
Now anyone would think there was some sort of urgency with a deadline as tight as a month, however;
The dispute between rock cat supporters, concerned neighbours and the council first started about 20 years ago, and reports of feral cats living in the rocks date back 50 years.
Just like all wild animals cats have the potential to annoy residents, but whether people like it or not, feral cats are now part of the ecological makeup of Australia. Only long term solutions based around manageable colonies (not knee jerk reactions made to appease the disgruntled and vocal) will keep numbers down.
Even if you don’t support widespread TNR – you should support these rescuers who are stepping up to help this group of cats who through the ignorance of humans, find themselves evicted from their home of half a century.Â
